Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe CEO of French consumer goods giant Danone downplayed the threat of obesity drugs on its food business, arguing that consumers were likely to turn to healthy products as part of their new weight loss regime. Antoine de Saint-Affrique said that surging demand for drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro would only increase consumer appetite for more nutritional products. "We see ourselves as extremely complementary to GLP-1s," de Saint-Affrique told CNBC's Charlotte Reed Wednesday. GLP-1s, or glucagon-like peptide 1 agonists, are the underlying class of drugs in weight loss injections such as Wegovy and Mounjaro. watch nowThe rapid rise of such drugs has prompted concern among food makers, who fear falling sales as consumer appetite wanes.

Sometimes those neighbors find an unexpected connection, like a love of condensed milk: milk boiled down until it’s thick enough to cling to the spoon, with sugar added to make it last longer. Yoo first tasted the cake in elementary school in Queens, on a day students were asked to bring in a dish from their heritage. He tried different brands of Thai tea and decided that a minimalist version, with just tea, vanilla and food coloring, would be best. Yoo goes so far as to leave the cake in the refrigerator for two nights, flipping it in between. The cake is finished with whipped cream, coconut flakes toasted near gold and lime zest with its bright sting.

Not every corner of the plant-based food industry has been burned. After the boom-and-bust cycle of Beyond Meat stock, analysts have wondered what comes next for the plant-based food space. The alternative protein market Beyond Meat's struggles have left some skeptical about which companies have what it takes to meet the needs of consumers who want to avoid animal-based products for health or environmental reasons. After topping $230 per share at its highest point, Beyond Meat stock now trades below $7. There's a business argument beyond the alternative protein market that can bode well when forecasting demand, Morningstar's Goldstein said.

Powdered drink mixes that are widely promoted as “toddler milks” for older babies and children up to age 3 are unregulated, unnecessary and “nutritionally incomplete,” the American Academy of Pediatrics warned Friday. Also, toddler drinks are different than medical formulas prescribed for specific conditions, such as heart disease or problems digesting certain foods. Fuchs and other experts point to the lack of common standards for toddler milks, which means the ingredients vary widely among brands. The group also wants requirements to ensure the products are not linked to regulated infant formula or sold next to formula. A health group petitioned the FDA in 2020 to regulate toddler milks, but the agency is still reviewing the request.

Neanderthals skillfully hunted giant cave lions, a study showed for the first time. Nearly half a million years ago, humans in Africa were assembling wood into large structures, according to a study published Thursday that describes notched and tapered logs buried under sand in Zambia. The discovery drastically pushes back the historical record of structural woodworking. Before, the oldest known examples of this craft were 9,000-year-old platforms on the edge of a British lake. It’s not clear what early humans were building in Africa. Dr. Milks said that the new discovery suggested that they used wood not just for spears or digging sticks, but also for far more ambitious creations such as platforms or walkways.

CNN —Archaeologists have unearthed the oldest known wooden structure, and it’s almost half a million years old. The wooden structure has no real parallel in the archaeological record, according to the study. The wooden structure was found at an archaeological site upstream of Kalambo Falls in Zambia. Researchers aren’t certain which species of ancient human made the structure and wooden tools, but it is highly unlikely to have been our own. Larry Barham (right), professor of archaeology at the University of Liverpool, carefully uncovers the wooden structure on the riverbank with a fine spray.

NEW YORK (AP) — Researchers have uncovered a simple structure from the Stone Age that may be the oldest evidence yet of early humans building with wood. But it is much more complex than I thought.”Barham and his team dug up the log structure — plus a handful of wooden tools — from a riverbed site that sits above a waterfall in Zambia. They think the crossed logs could have been the base for a bigger structure like a walkway or a platform. The log structure was made at least 476,000 years ago, while the wood tools are slightly younger, under 400,000 years old. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group.

One such prediction came Monday from Morgan Stanley analysts who forecasted a 1.3% drop in calorie consumption in the U.S. by 2035. The shift in behavior is notable because it will affect a sizeable demographic group that represents a disproportionate share of food consumption, the analysts said. In fact, some patients taking these medicines say they have to sometimes force themselves to eat due to a lack of appetite. These types of patterns were seen in consumer research Morgan Stanley conducted in June and July among 300 patients taking these medicines. Keurig Dr Pepper, with its coffee business accounting for about 30% of corporate sales, offers some diversification from at-risk beverage categories, Morgan Stanley said.

Cold drinks tend to cost more, but they can also cause headaches for staff. Cold drinks account for 75% of Starbucks' beverage sales. CNN —The plant-based milk market is exploding, offering beverages made from seeds, nuts, legumes, grains and blends of those ingredients, often marketed as ready replacements for the traditional choice of cow’s milk. The study analyzed nutrition labels and ingredients for 233 plant-based milk products from 23 different manufacturers and found only 28 of the beverages had as much or more protein, vitamin D and calcium as cow’s milk. “Most of the plant milk products fall between the level of 1% and skim milk in terms of saturated fat,” Johnson said. “As a person who studies the microbiome, however, I wouldn’t recommend plant-based milk products for fiber yet. “About a third of the plant-based milk products have sugar or added sugar in quantities that’s more similar to a flavored milk like a strawberry or chocolate milk,” Johnson said.

Reconsidering the Staycation

I’ve always been skeptical of the staycation. So I was intrigued to discover, thanks to my colleague Catherine Pearson, that I have been staycationing all wrong. Evidently, my tendency to stumble into time off without a plan is unlikely to produce a restorative effect. This weekend, you could, for instance, seek out some vegan ice cream that doesn’t taste terrible. You could try running in a pool, which is easier on the joints but as effective as running on land.

Sullivan’s first few years in San Francisco were difficult: He found the L.G.B.T.Q. community much larger and more diffuse than Milwaukee’s, and his relationship was collapsing amid tensions around his desire to medically transition. The spot used USDA funds to disparage plant-based milk, per a complaint filed with the USDA. The ad, which was created using funding from a US Department of Agriculture program to promote dairy milk, features Plaza talking up "Wood Milk," a milk alternative made from trees. Right now, the Food and Drug Administration is seeking public comments on proposed labeling guidelines for plant-based milk. While just 15% of all milk sold in the US in 2022 was plant-based, the category is growing faster than cow's milk: Plant-based milk sales grew 8% to $2.8 billion in 2022, according to the Plant Based Foods Association. Only dairy milk is real milk.
"Any upside risk coming from higher milk prices is going to pose an additional challenge," said Upasna Bhardwaj, chief economist at India's Kotak Mahindra Bank. "Cattle prices have doubled as there are fewer cows in the market," said Sharma, who has been raising cattle since childhood. "We will witness further rises in milk prices during summer," Shah said. India's SMP imports are likely to hit an all-time high in the fiscal year that started April, surpassing record purchases in 2011-12, dairy industry officials said. The temporary removal of those duties would mean imports rise even further, the NDDB official said.
